Masters Paint KitI recently purchased one of these things for 180$...
Now i'm not usually one to get all fanboy-y on GW product, i do critisize sculpts and various product here and there.
But this. Has got to be. The greatest. Product. Made by GW. EVER.
To be sure, im not doing a sales advertising thingy, im just looking out for the public :)
Sure sure, i can hear a lot of people say, "I can by no means justify 180$ for 5 paint brushes and a nice carry case. For 180, i can buy 36 fine detail brushes!!!" Quality, not quantity, is what I say.

Although not the best description, it gives you an idea.
Kolinsky Sable is the world's best material for painting, simply because the hair's on the brush go to a natural point, and minute detail becomes more than simplistic to achieve.
What am I getting at? Im not saying sink 180 dollars, the moment you read this, into this kit. What im saying is that this kit, for competitive painters, is incredible. It holds a ridiculous amount of paint, has unbelievable flexibility, and is at the same time very resilient. Not to mention the carry case, the bolter shell water pot, and the cloth& soap combo. For anyone that wants to makea serious investment into their painting, and have it pay off, this is the way to go.

I got four kolinsky sable brushes for $15, an old GW glue can for a paint pot, brush soap for $2.50, and some nice paper towels (about 100) for $2-$5.
It may not look as nice, but I'll hold on to the rest of my $158 for now...
That sounds way too harsh, but I don't feel that the price is justified at $180.
I am slightly curious as to if there actually is a difference. Do you think you could post pics of two models painted before you had the set and after?

Although I can't justify paying THAT much and only getting 5 brushes in return, I can't really comment on anything, seeing as how each of my brushes (Winsor Newton 7 series) are $20 each.

I suppose if the GW Master's are of the same caliber, the price would make more sense.

When I saw gw advertise the set, I though " COOL " when I saw the price " NOT COOL "
I'm lucky enough to actually have received one. At the Exeter/ Harwood model contest last October, one of the special theme awards was 25 years of Warhammer. I was basically the only one there with a GW model, the forgeworld Tank Destroyer. I ended up receiving a Warpstone award and also one of the Masters paint kit. It looks too nice to use.

Ainu, the brushes in the gw masters set are the same if not a little bit better quilty than the winsor newton 7 series, but they are still a little ofer priced... just a little  i'm a staffer and i still havend bought one :S but i might soon

Actually they are the same, when the set first came out someone said they were just relabled Winsor and newton series 7.
That being said, it is still way to over priced. Now I cant tell from the picture very well, but im assuming those are 000,00,0, 1, and 2/3 brushed.
Going by curry's prices the cost would be
15.91 for the 000
16.44 for the 00
16.99 for the 0
19.18 for the 1
23.58 for the 2
which adds up to 92 dollars, but thats if their not having a sale( which they usually are) or if your not a student( students get discount.
Still that basically means your paying 90 dollars for a wooden box, a metal cup.. sorry I mean Bolter shell, and some brush soap( which isnt very expensive.
And hey, if you want yourself a wooden box, go get one fomr the wooden box shop, where you can get these http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/woodenboxes_1925_1116549
for only 25$ american.. and it looks considerably nicer then the gw one.

Well the initial shock of recieving this kit has worn off, and I am no longer as full as when I got it, so all that extra money would have been nice...
In retrospect, had I been a bit more sane anda little less rich, i woudn't have bought the set either, but cool things make you do strange things with your money :)

Ten years ago, all GW brushes were sable, the ones I picked up in november '06 from GW really pissed me off, the quality has gone to crap; neither brush I bought holds its point.
I'll be sticking with Tamiya and art store sable brushes from now on.
I do like the bolter shell (but I thought bolts were shell-less?).
BTW, is the lid fastened with magnets?

i buy cheapy $2-5 brushes, and i have one size 000 winsor newton series 7 for freehand, right now im STILL using my GW brush that i hate(dont ask...because i dont know why...)
i personally think the only brush that needs to be top notch is the detail brush(maybe have two sizes) while the rest are really just applying paint anyways and its cheaper to lose a $5 brush than a $20 one

I use a set of brushes I bought at Wal-mart for $3. I have been using them for 5 months now and they havent lost their points, and I have never washed them with soap or done anything special to maintain the quality, and yet still they work perfectly. I see absolutely no reason to spend almost $200 for five brushes that are supposed top work as well as the brushes I bought for $3. I am sorry, but the Masters paint kit is the most frivolous waste of money i have ever seen. I purchase supplies based on what works well, not based on flashy packaging or big names.

@ Mason: As well, the case is fastened with magnets, so there is no fear of dropping it and everything going to hell. yah the shell is a bolters. Quite smaller than i imagined, but a shell nonetheless
WELL, now I feel like a total idiot after all the comments posted by the majority, but whatever, i still have brushes, soap and a nice case, even though my wallet may not be as healthy 8)

the price shouldnt matter if you feel good using the brushes, i can use any brush even if i hate it(GW!!!) and still get good results(everything in my WIPs)
once i start with my new brushes i might get better results and enjoy it more
if you get good results and enjoy painting with your expensive brushes then perfect!

First things first.
A brush does not make a painter good. A good painter will be able to make something great as long as the brush can hold a point.
Personally, I'm happy with cheap currys brand synthetic brushes. The small ones last me about 3 months of moderate use, which is fine.
The GW kit is not worth $180.. its nice, but its pretty much a novelty item like the collectors edition rule books for fantasty and 40k. Nice, but by no means necessary.

I use Raphael 8404 which are kolinsky sable as well and in my opinion better quality than serie 7, at least for my painting style. Between 18 and 25$ a piece if bought here or 6 euros each if bought in France so guess where I get them  So for 150 I get roughly 15 brushes and I already have a water pot!
